Installed in Chicago Stories: Carlos Javier Ortiz and David Schalliol, Museum of Contemporary Photography 2019“A film that is both about holding onto and restoring dignity in the face of insurmountable odds… a profoundly emotional work that should be seen by all.”&#38;nbsp;— Third Coast Review“Brings new meaning to the phrase ‘the wrong side of the tracks.'”&#38;nbsp;— Bay Area Reporter
“At its core, the film demonstrates how systemic racial and political inequalities play an active role in the devastation of communities... The healing thread, however, is the community we come to learn about in the process. By following Deborah Payne, an “Englewoodian,” homeowner, community activist, and co-producer of the documentary, we see the investment that people have in their homes, neighbors, and community... Payne’s devotion to sustaining a quality of life among her neighbors until the last house is knocked down carries an energy throughout the film that illuminates the meaning of ‘home.’” — South Side Weekly
“What we see play out in this film is that... systems do what they were designed to do. That’s the insidiousness of structural racism; unless we proactively organize against it, it will condemn us to do its damage.” — Marisa Novara, Metropolitan Planning Council&#38;nbsp;

Dir. Brian Ashby &#38;amp; Ben Kolak

154min, 9 episodes

Five experiences of publicly-funded education in Chicagoland:Robert / Calumet City

Gina / Chicago Lawn
Natalia / Humboldt Park

Kyle / North Center
Emma / Wilmette
observed in the style of Michael Apted’s Seven Up! series and inspired by Jean Anyon’s 1980 text “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work.”
“Eye-opening, perspicacious documentary filmmaking at its finest, Central Standard addresses the complexities of what a group of thoughtful and genuinely world-aware teens face or are favored with simply by their geography and economic class. Most importantly, it inculcates a profound, lasting and unpretentious empathy with its subjects. You won’t want to let these kids go.”&#38;nbsp;—&#38;nbsp;Chris Ware, Graphic Novelist

		<description>Scrappers
Dir. Brian Ashby, Ben Kolak &#38;amp; Courtney Prokopas
2010
94min

					Set in Chicago's labyrinth of alleys, Scrappers is a portrait of Oscar and Otis, two metal scavengers searching for a living with brains, brawn and battered pickup trucks. The film shows how the 2008 financial collapse affects these men and their families.

One of Roger Ebert’s Best Documentaries of 2010&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;amp; 👍👍 Two thumbs up&#38;nbsp;👍👍
Winner: Audience Award &#38;amp; Best Documentary Feature, Chicago Underground Film Festival&#38;nbsp;
Festivals:&#38;nbsp;
Southern Circuit / Maryland / Revelation Perth / Citizen Jane / Landlocked
“Superior vérité doc...

					painlessly imparts a whole lot of insight into the travails of undocumented immigrants, the
persistence of segregation, and the workings of the globalized economy. Miraculously, the whole
thing plays more like a gritty valentine to the City in a Garden than an earnest left-wing guilt trip.” — Chicago Reader

“Scrappers goes beyond the novelty of the profession to tackle tough questions of race, work, public and private housing, and immigration. The film is a moving portrait of the precariousness of life and work at the bottom of the American economy in one of the country’s wealthiest cities.” — In These Times&#38;nbsp;
“Patient, humane, committed”&#38;nbsp;— SF Weekly
“A sometimes moving, sometimes funny, and always unflinching look deep into a world many of us never knew existed."&#38;nbsp;— Maryland Film Festival
“Takes up resonating issues like the economic downturn, fatherhood and failed relationships and sees them play out in the men’s homes, the cabs of their trucks and on the grid of Chicago’s alleyways.”&#38;nbsp;— NewCity

“Offers a modest but unexpectedly
beautiful view of the city” — Chicago Tribune

“A beautifully shot and tenderly rendered documentary... Avoiding folksy caricature as well as polemic, Scrappers feels more like a poem you have to let settle in your own time.”&#38;nbsp;— ArtThreat

	Hairy Who &#38;amp; The Chicago Imagists
Dir. Leslie Buchbinder
2014
107minProducer, contributing cinematographer, archival researcher
A lavishly-illustrated romp through Chicago Imagist art: the Second City scene that challenged Pop Art’s status quo in the 1960s, then faded from view. Forty years later, its funk and grit inspires artists from Jeff Koons to Chris Ware, making the Imagists the most famous artists you never knew..

Festivals:
Minneapolis-St. Paul / Newport Beach / Milwaukee / San Diego Design / SF DocFest / Napa Valley / CineMarfa

Screened at art centers worldwide:
Liverpool Biennial / The New Museum / mumok Vienna / MCA Chicago / Goldsmiths CCA / Art Institute of Chicago / Fondazione Prada
WTTW Chicago PBS broadcast“Illuminating... helps fill a yawning gap in the conventional telling of American modern art’s story.” — Hyperallergic
“Featuring some 40 interviews plus archival footage and animation, the film makes a compelling case for the continued relevance of the Midwest’s merry pranksters. It also faces head-on the question of whether the artists’ resolute outsider stance, along with their second-tier base of operations, will inevitably relegate them to footnote status in postwar American art history.”&#38;nbsp;— Art in America

“Fulsomely intelligent... both richly informative and utterly entertaining.” — Border Crossings&#38;nbsp;“Far from a dry litany of talking heads... A love letter.” —&#38;nbsp;Chicago Tribune
